Among the many books available on the Asian amphibian and reptilian fauna, this book stands out as being one of the best for numerous reasons. It is a highly informative introduction to the history, zoological expeditions and those whom conducted them and or studied the collected museum material, taxonomy, field studies and methods, lists of recently described new genera and species, conservation issues and strategies accompanied by beautifully illustrated examples of the amphibian and reptile fauna of the region.

The extensive list of literature references followed by two separate comprehensive bibliographical accounts of species identification of the amphibian and reptiles set out first by region then for each country, is on its own an invaluable source of information and a must starting point in research for any students of zoology or anyone with specific country or faunistic group interests.

This book further details regional and individual countries legislation that may or may not protect amphibian and reptilian fauna and further amplifies the

urgent and neglected conservation issues surrounding these fauna and their integral role in the daily natural function of the local and regional natural ecosystems – including the fauna being dependent on the protection of the remaining forests and jungles to ensure longevity of all living fauna and flora.

This is a fine quality book, and although it does not deal with specific species or faunistic groups in great detail, the coverage is wide including many important conservation issues and historical facts. The tally of many excellent colour photos of a range of crocodiles, frogs, lizards, snakes and turtles from Pakistan and Nepal to Sulawesi, further extends its use as an identification guide and generally is an invaluable addition to any naturalist’s library and or those interested in Asia’s fauna.
